Compliance Corner: HIPAA guidelines
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is a federal law that provides requirements for the protection of health information. As a broker or agent selling UnitedHealthcare Individual & Family Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace plans, you must act in compliance with all federal and state laws and regulations, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) regulations and guidelines, and UnitedHealthcare policies, procedures, and rules related to privacy and security.
All UnitedHealthcare Individual & Family Plans (IFP) brokers and agents must protect consumer/member Protected Health Information (PHI) and Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and report any potential disclosure incidents to UnitedHealthcare within 24 hours upon discovery.
